BP-Y14L Kit – High-Capacity USB-C Battery Kit for Yaesu FT1, FT2, FT3, FT5 and VX8

Extended Battery Life with Everything You Need to Get Started

The BP-Y14L Kit includes everything you need to upgrade your Yaesu handheld radio with more power, modern charging, and a user-serviceable design. This 5Ah battery pack more than doubles your runtime, offers fast USB-C charging, and features a durable ABS enclosure. This kit has been updated to replace the plastic and nickel contact block with a simplified PCB, allowing for a simplified assembly process. Instructions have not yet been updated, but the idea is the same. Solder to the PCB the same way you would solder to the nickel strips.

⚠️ This is an advanced DIY kit. The assembly requires soldering, wiring, and careful component placement. If you are not comfortable with intricate builds, consider the pre-assembled BP-Y14L instead.

Nicely built. Fit to the radio is good. The instructions need to be updated on the very first part due to a change in manufacturing. Extends the battery life tremendously. Have already recommended it to friends.

FT-5 battery kit

Bought a couple for my Dad and I to do as a project together. Watch the linked video, it makes the steps go smooth. Wasn’t overwhelming or too difficult. The end product is great. After a full charge, I left the radio on with APRS running tx every 60 min and the pack got me 20 hours. No complaints here. In addition, customer service is outstanding. Communication was fast and to the point.

Worth the wait

I've been using this battery pack for several weeks now and it's fantastic! Lasts for days and charges quickly with a high current charger.
Here's the caveat, I bought it as a kit and it was a bit intimidating, but I was up for a challenge and have pretty good soldering skills. It was difficult and I ran into a few issues that were promptly addressed by W0AEZ.
Assembled and working great, but I would highly recommend spending the money and buying already assembled.

A fun kit build and works great on my FT5D

Fun kit, but you're not going to build this with a clumsy fat soldering iron. It requires a bit of finesse and patience. Double and triple check your wiring and battery orientation before putting the batteries in it. I referred to the pdf on the website as well as a YouTube video. The 3D printed parts are very well designed and the final fit it fine. A tight mate with my FT5D. The 'finish' of the plastic prints is average. You can tell it's a 3D print. The battery capacity is fantastic. I can leave my radio monitoring on a local emergency service frequency for 36 hours or so before the radio objects. Charging is easy. The 2 lithium cells are Samsung INR21700-50E, well made and good review.

Great Battery Upgrade

This is a terrific upgrade to my Yaesu FT5D. The original battery had limited life and this battery greatly extends that time period. It also had the USB-C charging which plugs right into my car ports. I can use the handheld in the car and charge the battery when I am using the car. This battery is AWESOME! Charged it up last weekend and its still has a ways to go beforr having to recharge. But the best part, is the way it was packaged. The Spacer for the belt clip, had the screws imbedded in it, instead of loose in the package. Made it so much easier to find and not lose them.
